Large, overly prominent ears can negatively impact a person’s self-esteem and make them feel self-conscious about their appearance. In children, protruding ears can lead to teasing, taunting and bullying. Luckily there is an excellent solution in the form of otoplasty, or ear pinning surgery with Dr. Leong in Morgantown WV. This procedure helps to reduce excess ear cartilage, tuck the ears closer to the scalp, and resize the overall ear shape.

What is ear surgery?

Ear surgery is customized to your unique cosmetic needs; there is no one-size fits all surgery with Dr. Leong. The doctor will create a personalized plan for improving your appearance that will carefully balance all of your features, ensuring aesthetic harmony. Incisions are made at the back of the ear where they are unnoticeable. Morgantown WV clients find that their results are highly natural and well-suited to your existing facial structure.

Children who undergo ear surgery tend to feel better about themselves and enjoy social situations and gatherings more. Surgery can be performed during summer or winter break so that the child has time to recuperate before starting school again.

What are some of the chief benefits of the procedure?

  • a more attractive appearance overall
  • reduced likelihood of bullying or teasing
  • more hairstyles to choose from
  • more balance among the features
  • enhanced self-confidence

Who is an ideal candidate for otoplasty?

This procedure is effective for treating:

  • lop ear
  • shell ear
  • misshapen ears
  • large ears
  • birth defects
  • asymmetrical ears
  • enlarged earlobes
  • ears that stick out too much

Ear surgery can be performed on adults of any age, and on children of around 5 or 6 and older. Candidates for surgery should be mentally and physically healthy with no major medical concerns, and they should have realistic expectations for their results.

What can I expect from recovery?

Dr. Leong’s approach to surgery is always conservative, cutting down on recovery times and expediting your healing. Patients tend to need between 2 and 6 weeks to recuperate after ear surgery. There will be some swelling, tenderness and bruising as is common with any surgical procedure, but Dr. Leong will make sure you receive the proper pain medications as well as a detailed aftercare plan for your recovery. Clients are asked to sleep on their backs so that the stitches are not disturbed. A compression garment can be worn at night to keep the new ear shape intact. Results are visible immediately and will last forever.
