Microcannulas: The Future of Filler Injections

September 22, 2017

Although it would be difficult to tell the difference between a needle and microcannula, if they were sitting side by side, you would be amazed at all the advantages a blunt tipped microcannula has over a basic needle when it comes to injecting dermal fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Sculptra.

There are multiple benefits of using a microcannula and the United States is slowly but surely catching on to this compared to Europe where it is considered the standard. Some of these benefits are: better cosmetic outcome, safer, less bruising, and comfortability. Many of the risks that are associated with dermal filler are also reduced when using microcannulas. A blunt tipped microcannula greatly decreases the chance of cannulating a vessel which can lead to more serious complications.

Unfortunately, there is only a handful of providers in Western Pennsylvania that use microcannulas. Dr. Leong NEVER uses needles to inject filler. With his expertise and extended knowledge of microcannulas, he often gives lectures at national meetings about this technique. Microcannulas are ideal for injecting filler into nasolabial folds, lips, marionette lines, nose, cheeks, and tear trough. Injecting with microcannulas also helps to decrease the rate of recovery by minimizing trauma, so there is less bruising, swelling, and discomfort.
