Cosmetic filler injections have become a very popular treatment for patients in Pittsburgh and around the country. The single most significant concern for patients who have filler injections is the social downtime as a result of possible bruising from the injections. The use of microcannulas very significantly reduces the chance of bruising with these treatments. Microcannulas have largely replaced the use of sharp needles in Europe and are rapidly gaining popularity in the United States.

What are some of the benefits of microcannulas?

At Sistine Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Leong is proud to provide injectables only with microcannulas. This technique offers patients several benefits, including:

  • Less bruising and swelling
  • Less downtime and discomfort
  • Often improved cosmetic outcome

What can you expect the day of treatment?

On the day of treatment, Dr. Leong uses a traditional needle to create an entry point for the microcannula. Once this has been created, he carefully injects filler using the microcannula, targeting specific areas of the face in need of volume. Because the microcannula has a rounded-tip needle, it is extremely unlikely to penetrate a vessel and is therefore less likely to cause trauma or bruising.

Furthermore, the microcannula can be used more effectively than a needle to separate tiny layers of tissue—this is very useful when injecting filler around scars.

The microcannula injection technique can be especially beneficial in sensitive areas of the face, such as the lips (which are prone to swelling) and under the eyes in the tear trough area.
