Dysport®

Dysport LogoI believe that Dysport® has been a very useful addition to the options available to patients to combat the slow accumulation of lines and wrinkles on the face. Dysport® joins another excellent neurotoxin, BOTOX® Cosmetic, as a powerful tool to treat, and to a certain degree prevent, the appearance of wrinkles in the first place.

What is Dysport®?

Dysport® is a muscle paralyzer that temporarily evens out wrinkles and creases to create softer, younger-looking skin. Every time you make a facial expression (such as laughing, smiling or squinting) different areas of your face deepen into folds and creases. As we get older and lose our skin elasticity, those lines and wrinkles become more pronounced. Dysport® is often injected into many of the same areas where Botox® Cosmetic is used, such as the forehead, crows’ feet, lines between eyebrows, frown lines, lines running alongside of nose, wrinkles above the lip and creases around the neck. Treatment only takes approximately 15 minutes, but the effects can last as long as 4 months. Dysport® offers a quick and easy non-surgical solution to address bothersome signs of aging.

I have been going to Dr. Leong for Dysport injections for over a year and I can’t recommend him enough. I was developing heavy frown lines and thanks to him they are completely gone. Dr. Leong is just great all around. Knowledgable, happy to educate or reassure, gives no pressure on anything. His main concern is definitely the patient and what is best for them.

What other conditions is Dysport® used for?

  1. Dysport® is FDA approved for the treatment of migraine headaches
  2. Dysport® can reduce overactive sweat glands in patients with Hyperhidrosis
  3. Dysport® can be injected into the masseter muscle to slim the appearance of the face and improve the look of the cheeks and jaw
  4. Dysport® can be injected into the muscles of the upper lip to reduce the elevation that causes a “gummy smile”

The History of Dysport®

Dysport® was originally created as a treatment for disorders involving involuntary movement (i.e. Cervical Dystonia and Blepharospasm) and later for cosmetic purposes (once doctors recognized its ability to smooth out creases in the skin). In the United States, it has been used as an aesthetic enhancement since 2009 and is now used in 57 countries. Dysport® was approved for use in Europe for many years prior to its approval in the United States. A study in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery revealed that 87% of patients who received Dysport® injections noticed a decrease in their wrinkles.

How does Dysport® work?

Dysport® works much in the same that BOTOX® Cosmetic works. Both agents are neurotoxins (a form of the Botulinum Toxin Type A) that restrict movement in the muscles. When muscles are softened and relaxed, the skin is able to smooth out, eliminating lines and wrinkles. After treatment, most patients are able to see a difference within 48-72 hours, but it takes approximately 2 weeks to see the true result.

Who is a good candidate for Dysport®?

Dysport-with-bottleA good candidate for Dysport® is someone who is looking to transform a tense and aged appearance into a vibrant, happy and youthful look. The best results are maintained by those who follow a Dysport® regimen and receive injections approximately every 4 months.

Do Dysport® Injections Hurt?

You may feel some discomfort when initially injected, but pain is typically minimal. I perform all the injections myself and make every effort to ensure that you have a comfortable and pleasant experience.

What is the cost of Dysport® Injections in Pittsburgh?

The price of Dysport® typically varies due to the injector’s skill level as well as their geographic location. The cost of Dysport® is generally calculated one of two ways: by the unit or per area. The three most common areas to get Dysport® injected into is the glabella, crow’s feet, and forehead. The cost of Dysport® in Pittsburgh ranges from $300-$600 with the average being $450 for each area injected. The cost of Dysport® with Dr. Leong is priced by the area: $350 for the first area, $300 for the second area, and $225 for the third area. Dr. Leong also extends a discount for returning Dysport® patients that get treated recurrently.

Can I combine Dysport® treatment with Dermal Fillers and Ultherapy®?

Yes, Dysport® is often combined with other Dermal Fillers such as Restylane®, Perlane®, JUVÉDERM®, Sculptra Aesthetic®, Radiesse® and Ultherapy®. Having more than one treatment often maximizes results and further reduces wrinkles because fillers “fill in” lines and Dysport® “smooths out” lines. Both Dysport® and Fillers can be injected the same day. I recommended waiting approximately 2 weeks after Ultherapy® treatment to have Dysport® injections.
